- Uncertainty: Navigating the Fog of No “Why” or “What”
Ever find yourself feeling stuck, unsure of what you truly want or why you even want it?
That’s exactly where I am right now, and I want to talk about it.
Sure, I have responsibilities – feeding my family, paying the bills – but beyond that, my ‘Why’ feels… uninspired. And that’s unusual for me. Normally, I thrive on motivation, turning setbacks into stepping stones. But lately, something’s different.
A Little Backstory
I come from a traditional family in India and moved to the U.S. years ago. Not long after, my marriage ended in divorce. It was a tough time – no close friends or family nearby, no stable job. My parents urged me to return home, thinking it would be easier, but I stayed. The stigma of being a divorced woman back home was too much, so I chose to stand on my own here in the U.S.
Starting from scratch with no ‘hire-me-now’ skills, I faced a steep uphill climb.
At that time, I didn’t struggle to find my purpose – my why was clear.
That clarity became my guiding force, helping me navigate uncertainty with confidence and direction.
Current State
While my why – my purpose – was always clear, I now find myself struggling with it. It feels as though I’ve been on autopilot in both my personal and professional life. But as I navigate this fog of uncertainty, I’m beginning to see that this isn’t just a phase – it’s an opportunity. A chance to pause, reassess, and realign.
Here’s how I’m working through it.
Accept Uncertainty
It’s easy to say, but let’s be real – not every day do I wake up ready to embrace uncertainty with open arms. Still, life is inherently unpredictable. No one knows what will happen in the next minute, and while that might sound unsettling, it’s simply the reality of life.
I’ve learned (on most days) to be okay with not having all the answers especially when switching careers, starting something new, or chasing a dream like entrepreneurship. Instead of feeling trapped by the unknown, I’m realizing that uncertainty can be freeing. It opens doors to possibilities rather than locking us into a single path. So, I’m learning to focus less on the final destination and more on the journey itself.
Also, starting the morning right helps me stay positive when everything goes sideways. Check out this mindset ritual I started recently: Start Your Day Like a Superstar.
Keep Yourself Motivated
I’ll admit – my why isn’t some grand, awe-inspiring mission. It’s simple: to live a comfortable, healthy life and give back to society. But there are days when even that feels dim. When that happens, I reignite my motivation by taking small steps toward my goals and seeking inspiration from outside sources – books, conversations, a change of scenery, or even the most unexpected places… like a cockroach.

Reflect on Yourself
Take a moment to reflect on your journey – the highs, the lows, and everything you’ve learned along the way. We often overlook our passions and strengths simply because we haven’t paused to notice them.
For me, sitting with doubt and uncertainty has been uncomfortable, but necessary. Every step forward – big or small – has taught me something valuable. And let’s not forget – we’ve made it this far, pushed through challenges, and come out stronger. We’re tougher than we think. We just need to remind ourselves of that sometimes.
Take Small Steps
My once stable 9-to-5 job started feeling more like a daily grind – draining, routine, and devoid of fulfillment. The six-figure salary and financial responsibilities kept me going, but deep down, I knew something was missing.
So, I took small steps. I dabbled in side hustles, explored new interests, and pushed beyond my comfort zone. It turns out, you never know what might spark a passion or lead to unexpected opportunities.
Today, I may not be earning as much as I did in my corporate role, and uncertainty still lingers but I’m happier, more fulfilled, and far less stressed. And to me, that’s worth more than any paycheck.

Reach Out
Okay, I’ll admit it – I’m not great at reaching out. When I’m stressed or overwhelmed, I retreat into my shell and try to figure things out on my own. I’ve always felt like my biggest motivator, turning to blogs and videos for inspiration. And honestly, I usually only talk about my struggles after I’ve overcome them.
More than once, friends and well-wishers have asked, “Why didn’t you tell us sooner? We could have helped!” And they’re right.
If you’re comfortable, talking things through with a friend, mentor, or therapist can bring much-needed clarity. I used to believe I had to solve everything alone, but I’ve learned that sometimes, an outside perspective can make all the difference.
Take Your Time
Self-discovery is a journey – it doesn’t happen overnight. It’s perfectly fine to be in the “figuring-it-out” stage for a while, especially with all the uncertainty that comes with it. Staying open to new experiences and giving yourself grace are key to finding your What and rediscovering your Why.
It’s also okay if someone else seems ahead. Our journeys and experiences are unique. And don’t forget to take care of yourself along the way. Prioritizing self-care isn’t a luxury – it’s a necessity, especially when navigating uncertainty. Need some ideas? Check out this blog: Self-Care for Everyone.
Practice Gratitude
It’s easy to overlook the good things in our lives, so I make it a habit to pause each day and reflect on what I’m grateful for – especially the moments shared with loved ones. Gratitude shifts our perspective, helping us see the beauty in the present.
Lately, I’ve also started thanking myself for sticking with it this far because that matters too.
