- Be Your Own Knight in Shining Armor
Be Your Own Knight in Shining Armor
Once upon a time, in the grand fairy tale of life, we were told that someone would come along to save us – a knight in shining armor, ready to slay the dragons of doubt, fear, and adversity. From Cinderella to Sleeping Beauty, we grew up with stories that reinforced this idea. Maybe it was the books, the movies, or the way life unfolded around me, but for the longest time, I believed that whenever I faced difficulties, someone else would come to my rescue.
Then came the most challenging period of my life. And yes, a knight in shining armor did appear, offering a hand to pull me out of my struggles.
But here’s the twist – that hand was my own. I was my own knight in shining armor.
The Myth of the Rescuer
Society often romanticizes the idea of being saved. From childhood, we are fed stories of princesses in distress and heroes who arrive just in time. But waiting to be rescued puts your destiny in someone else’s hands.
You are not a damsel in distress, nor a supporting character in your own life story.
You are the hero, the warrior, the one wielding the sword of determination and wearing the armor of resilience.
That doesn’t mean refusing help – it means relying on yourself first. Being your own knight in shining armor means taking control of your journey.
Crafting Your Own Armor
The most powerful armor isn’t made of metal and chainmail – it’s built through experience, strengthened by mistakes, and polished with confidence. Every setback, every hardship, every lesson learned adds another layer, making you stronger and more prepared for battle.
It’s easy to feel disheartened when things don’t go your way. I’ve certainly had days where stress and worry took over. But the moment I remind myself that my armor is growing stronger, that I am becoming more battle-tested, I feel empowered. Once I conquer my inner battles, my armor becomes impenetrable.
Let’s explore how to forge an unbreakable armor of resilience, courage, and self-love.
Resilience is Your Shield
Life will throw obstacles your way, but resilience keeps you standing. Adam Grant, a Wharton professor and organizational psychologist, describes resilience as a muscle that can be built and strengthened. In Option B, co-authored with Facebook’s Sheryl Sandberg, they explain how resilience is a skill developed over time. I work on building this muscle every day. A knight in shining armor isn’t invincible – they build resilience through experience.
Sandberg shares her personal journey through grief and loss, offering lessons on how to build resilience and find joy even in the hardest times.
Courage is Your Sword
Fear is inevitable, but facing it head-on is what sets you apart. Be brave enough to chase your dreams, speak your mind, and carve your own path. I still struggle with self-doubt and fear of failure, but I’ve learned to take action anyway.
The regret of not trying is far worse than failure itself. We fear so much – losing money, what others will think, what if it doesn’t work out – but obstacles aren’t just roadblocks. They can be the way forward. Ryan Holiday’s The Obstacle Is the Way explores this idea brilliantly.
One of my favorite quotes, from Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius, sums it up perfectly:
Inspired by Stoic philosophy, this book teaches how to turn obstacles into opportunities and thrive in adversity.
The impediment to action advances action.
What stands in the way becomes the way.
Just like a knight in shining armor, you must wield courage to move forward.
Self-Love is Your Helmet
Protect your mind and spirit with kindness. The way you speak to yourself matters. Be your own biggest supporter, not your harshest critic. This is something I’m working on. I’m not always gentle with myself, but I’m learning to show kindness and forgiveness. A true knight in shining armor not only defends others but also protects themselves.

Slay Your Inner Dragons
Not all battles are fought against external enemies. Sometimes, the fiercest dragons are the ones within: self-doubt, fear of failure, and the nagging voice that whispers, “You’re not good enough.” But remember, every knight in shining armor faces trials. Every hero has moments of uncertainty. The difference is that they push forward, despite the fear. To defeat these dragons, you must:
- Challenge negative thoughts with truth and evidence.
- Surround yourself with people who lift you up.
- Celebrate small victories along the way.
Write Your Own Legend
Your story is still unfolding. You don’t need someone else to rescue you when you have everything within you to rescue yourself. Unleash your inner strength and be your own knight in shining armor. Forge unbreakable armor and conquer the dragons of self-doubt and fear.
And let me tell you – when you realize you are your own savior, the joy and empowerment you feel are incomparable. Write your own destiny. Forge your own legend.
Because the best fairy tales are the ones where the hero takes charge of their own fate.
And that hero is you—the knight in shining armor of your own life.
