- The Best New Year Resolution I made!
Long ago, I used to religiously set New Year resolutions – a long list of ambitious goals I was determined to achieve. But over time, I learned an important lesson. There’s no need to wait for January 1st or any so-called auspicious day to make a change in your life.
If you feel inspired to improve or grow, the best time to start is NOW!
Thatโs why, for the past few years, Iโve been setting resolutions whenever I feel ready, regardless of the calendar. Life doesnโt hit pause until New Yearโs, so why should your growth?
This Year, One Resolution
That said, this New Year, I made a resolution. (Not because I was waiting for New Year – it just happened to come to mind around that time.)
After years of skipping resolutions, I decided to embrace one this year. Just one – and itโs a big one.. Are you ready? (Drumroll pleaseโฆ)
Now, this might not sound groundbreaking, but for me, itโs monumental. You see, Iโve spent most of my life being my own harshest critic. Iโm the first to point out my mistakes, the last to forgive myself, and Iโm often stuck replaying my blunders like a broken record.
The Struggle to Forgive Myself
Isnโt it fascinating how quickly we forgive others but hold onto our own missteps as if theyโre set in stone? Iโm guilty of this. I vividly remember silly mistakes from my childhood – things so trivial theyโd make others laugh, yet they haunt me.
Iโve tried reframing these moments as โlearning opportunitiesโ or โgrowth experiences”, but sometimes, a mistake is just a mistake. And thatโs okay. The problem arises when we let those mistakes define us.
This year, Iโm choosing to break that cycle.
My resolution is simple yet transformative: to accept my mistakes, past and future, and to forgive myself.
After all, Iโm the president of my own life. If presidents can pardon others, why shouldnโt I grant myself the same grace?
The Impact of Self-Criticism
For starters, holding onto guilt and self-criticism can be incredibly draining – physically, mentally, and emotionally. For years, I felt stuck in a cycle of unhappiness and guilt that I could have done something better, always finding a reason to be disappointed in myself.
Hereโs what Iโve observed when Iโm not kind to myself:
- Increased stress and anxiety: A harsh inner voice amplifies worry and tension. Often, I realized I was stressing over things that wouldnโt matter in a month, let alone a year.
- Lowered self-esteem: Constant criticism eroded my confidence and held me back from pursuing opportunities.
- Perfectionism: The pressure to be flawless created a cycle of doubt and frustration. Even writing blogs felt daunting because they didnโt feel โperfect.โ
- Negative relationships: My self-criticism impacted those around me, especially my kids. I realized I didnโt want to set this example for them.
- Reduced motivation: Negative thoughts drained my energy and enthusiasm for life.
The Power of Self-Forgiveness
Why is self-forgiveness so important? For me, it was like unloading a heavy backpack full of regrets and self-doubt.
ย Forgiving myself meant letting go of that weight, one regret at a time, so I could move forward with clarity and confidence.
What Self-Kindness Looks Like
Practicing self-kindness isnโt about ignoring your flaws or pretending to be perfect. Itโs about treating yourself with the same compassion youโd offer a friend. It means:
Acknowledging your efforts: Celebrate the good things youโve accomplished, no matter how small. Iโve learned to make time for self-care and to give myself permission to prioritize it without guilt. Itโs a powerful step toward being kinder to yourself. If youโd like to explore more about the importance of self-care, check out this blog post where I share my journey and insights.
Accepting imperfection: Mistakes donโt define you – theyโre simply part of being human. Success doesnโt require extraordinary skills or perfection; itโs about embracing who you are and making the most of it. Want to know more? Check out my blog โAverage or Ordinary? Still Winning at Lifeโ for a fresh perspective on why being โaverageโ is more than enough to thrive.
Letting go of the past: Whatโs done is done. Learn from it and move on. One resource that profoundly helped me is Self-Compassion: The Proven Power of Being Kind to Yourselfย by Dr. Kristin Neff. This book offers practical exercises and valuable insights to nurture self-compassion in your daily life.
A foundational guide to understanding self-compassion and its benefits, with actionable exercises and insights.
Another tool Iโm currently using to stay consistent with my resolution and make self-compassion second nature is The Mindful Self-Compassion Workbook by Dr.Kristin Neff and Christopher Germer. This workbook provides a step-by-step approach to overcoming harsh self-judgment and breaking free from impossible standards.
Based on the authors' groundbreaking eight-week Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) program, the workbook is filled with guided meditations (with audio downloads), informal practices you can do anywhere, exercises, and real-life stories of individuals applying these techniques.
It tackles common challenges such as relationship stress, body image issues, health concerns, and anxiety.
Embracing a Fresh Start
This resolution has already started to change my mindset. By being kinder to myself, Iโve noticed a shift in my energy. Iโm no longer drained by constant self-criticism. Instead, I feel lighter, more optimistic, and ready to embrace whatever comes my way.
So hereโs my message to you: Donโt wait for a specific date to make a positive change in your life.
If youโre searching for a resolution this year, let me suggest one: be kind to yourself. Itโs a simple yet powerful choice that can make a world of difference.
