  5. Take a Step Back: The Power of Reflection and Recalibration

Taking a step back was never something I embraced. I regarded it as a sign of laziness.

My mantra was “pushing ahead at all costs” – relentlessly chasing goals, ignoring challenges, and accepting sacrifices without question.

I never imagined I would consider taking a step back, let alone recommend it to anyone.

But life has a way of humbling even the most determined among us.

The Wake-Up Call

Recently, I found myself feeling lost and overwhelmed. In my usual fashion, I was juggling multiple tasks, desperately trying to generate income for my family of five. However, nothing seemed to work, and the stress was consuming me.

My mantra of “pushing ahead” was doing more harm than good, affecting both my physical and mental health.

Eventually, I realized I needed to pause and take a step back – a decision that proved to be one of the best I’ve ever made.

Here’s how I reached that conclusion and why it not only gave me clarity about my future but also improved my overall well-being.

A Reluctant Pause

Last year, I was laid off from a six-figure leadership role. With my spouse’s job unstable and three kids to support, financial pressure was intense. The tough job market made matters worse, as even the most talented people I knew struggled to find work.

For years, I had dreamed of leaving the 9-to-5 grind. The layoff, along with a modest severance, felt like a chance to pursue that dream. I jumped into solopreneurship, brainstorming low-cost business ideas.

My intentions were noble. I wasn’t driven by greed but by the need to provide for my family and shield my kids from financial instability.

However, I failed to realize that even simple ideas demand significant effort, especially when you’re a parent to three children.

The Breaking Point

My “pushing ahead” mentality had always been my superpower. It helped me overcome heartbreaks (quite a few!), build a life in a new country, land six-figure jobs at Fortune 500 companies, and navigate tough challenges like depression and the loss of loved ones. I took great pride in this strength.

But this time, that trusted approach failed me. I didn’t anticipate the toll it would take.

Freeing up my 9-to-5 hours didn’t magically create the bandwidth to handle multiple projects.

I was spreading myself thin, making minimal progress on any of the ventures, and burning out in the process.

The Realization

The relentless pursuit of income and happiness was draining me, and worst of all, I wasn’t enjoying the process – a reality reflected in my poor outcomes.

The persistent feeling of stagnation and lack of progress weighed heavily on my mind. I found myself constantly struggling to stay motivated, pulling myself out of the abyss I had unknowingly created.

One afternoon, utterly exhausted and drained, I shut my laptop, sank onto my bed, and began questioning everything about my situation.

What am I doing? Building financial independence without a 9-to-5 job.

Why am I doing it? To provide for my family and create a sustainable future.

My short-term goal (4-6 months)? Make $2,000 to $4,000 per month.

My long-term goal (1-2 years)? Make $10,000 to $20,000 per month.

As I analyzed my situation, the issue became clear: I was obsessing over quick results and chasing money as my primary goal.

The Epiphany

That same afternoon, I made an unconventional choice for my usual self – I took a step back.

With a cup of coffee in hand, I sat by the window and let myself simply be, free from the weight of my future plans. As I sipped, I noticed a little bunny foraging under the snow. It was a small, quiet joy that reminded me of the beauty in stillness.

In that moment, a proverb came to mind:

“To perform a good jump, take a step back so you can jump further forward.”

Its wisdom struck me deeply. Taking a step back isn’t about giving up or retreating – it’s about gaining momentum.

Just like a jumper prepares by stepping back, a pause offers rest, recovery, and the energy to relaunch with clarity and strength.

A New Plan

With this newfound perspective, I reframed my approach and revisited my goals while keeping my What and Why intact:

What am I doing? Building financial independence without a 9-to-5 job.

Why am I doing it? To provide for my family and create a sustainable future.

Short-term goal (4–6 months)? Build a social media presence through blogging and content creation.

Long-term goal (1–2 years)? Strengthen my online presence and create multiple income streams.

I shifted my focus from chasing money to embracing the journey itself, realizing that money is often simply the byproduct of purposeful and meaningful effort.

Instead of juggling multiple projects, I decided to focus on just two ideas that complemented each other: my blog and social media content creation. For the next three months, everything else was off the table. After that, I plan to gradually introduce a third idea into the mix.

The Results

Narrowing my focus brought clarity and meaningful progress. My stress levels decreased, and, most importantly, I rediscovered joy in the process.

Taking a step back wasn’t a failure; it was a necessary reset.

It allowed me to align my actions with my values and vision. As the proverb beautifully suggests, taking a step back gave me the momentum to jump further forward.
