  5. The Obstacle Is the Way: How It Transformed My Mindset

I love reading, but I’ll admit – I’m a slow reader. If a book is too long, it starts feeling like a never-ending marathon. That’s why I was so happy when I found The Obstacle Is the Way by Ryan Holiday. It’s not too big, and guess what? I actually finished it!

Pro tip: If you want to read more books while multitasking, try Audible it’s been a game-changer for me!

But beyond its size, what really makes this book special is a powerful quote that I remind myself of every day. It comes from the great Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius, and it’s right there on the cover:

“The impediment to action advances action.

What stands in the way becomes the way.”

Rethinking Obstacles

Think about that for a second. What if obstacles weren’t roadblocks but stepping stones? What if the very challenges we face are actually guiding us toward growth?

Now, picture yourself on the other side of your struggles – stronger, more confident, and more resilient.

What if the obstacles in our path right now are leading us to our greatest success?

The Origin of This Wisdom

It’s the year 170. The mighty Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius is at war. Or maybe he’s back at his palace, taking a quiet moment before another chaotic day. Wherever he is, he sits down to write – not for an audience, not for fame, but for himself.

In just a few words, he captures a life-changing idea:

Obstacles aren’t here to stop us; they’re here to shape us.

And guess what? You don’t have to be an emperor to apply this philosophy. It’s for all of us – regular people juggling work, family, responsibilities, and everyday struggles.

Applying This in Daily Life

Life is full of roadblocks, big and small. But what if, instead of seeing them as dead ends, we saw them as opportunities?

I won’t pretend it’s easy. I’ve faced plenty of challenges, and in the moment, I didn’t always remember Marcus Aurelius’ words. After all, we’re human, and perfection isn’t the goal (I don’t believe in perfection anyway!). But I try to reinforce this mindset daily – whether by keeping the book on my desk or nightstand, writing this blog, or creating a video about it. The more I practice it, the more natural it becomes.

Here are some real-life examples:

Didn’t get the job you wanted? Maybe it’s pushing you toward something even better.
Facing a setback? It could be the turning point that propels your growth. And if you’re dealing with – or anticipating – a layoff, don’t navigate it alone. Check out this blog for practical tips to safeguard your finances and bounce back stronger: How to Survive a Layoff and Protect Your Finances.
Feeling stuck? This could be your moment to pivot, try something new, and come out stronger.
Dealing with stress? Maybe it’s a sign to build patience, resilience, or a fresh perspective.

Pro tip!

Sometimes, a little self-care and kindness toward yourself can be the strongest foundation for resilience.

Turning Challenges into Opportunities

Marcus Aurelius faced relentless war, betrayal, financial crises, and personal loss. Yet, he never let these challenges break him. Instead, he saw each hardship as an opportunity to strengthen his patience, courage, resilience, and wisdom. In his own words, the obstacle is the way.

We may not be leading empires, but we all fight our own battles – some external, some internal. For me, one of those battles is wondering if I’m doing a good enough job as a parent while also building my business. The struggle is real, but each challenge we navigate reinforces the truth: the obstacle is the way.

Every hardship we face shapes us into stronger, wiser, and more resilient versions of ourselves.

A Simple Question to Ask Yourself

The next time life throws a challenge your way, pause and ask yourself:

“How can I use this to move forward?”

Remember, the obstacle is the way. The very thing standing in your path might be the key to your growth.

I’m sure you’ve had moments where an obstacle led you to something better. Sometimes, all we need is a little reminder or a moment of reflection to see it.

So, what challenges are you facing right now? How can you turn them into opportunities?
