- You Can Win in Life Even If You Are Average or Ordinary
Do you ever feel like you’re just average at everything?
Like you are not quite winning in life?
Whether it’s studies, sports, your physique, or any other area of life, you’re not alone. Trust me, I’m right there with you!
I’ve never thought of myself as “extraordinary” or “talented.” And no, this isn’t some humblebrag or a lack of self-esteem (okay, maybe just a smidge).
One day, I found myself spiraling down a rabbit hole of questions:
- What if I didn’t have this 9-to-5 tech job?
- How will I overcome difficulties?
- What am I actually good at
Spoiler Alert!
My answers didn’t do wonders for my confidence. Sure, I’m aware of my strengths and so-called weaknesses, but “great,” “extraordinary,” or “talented” have never been words I’d use to describe myself – well, except maybe in my mom’s eyes. But let’s be real, moms are the OG hype machines, and their descriptions tend to be, uh, wildly exaggerated.
Back to Reality
My answers didn’t do wonders for my confidence. Sure, I’m aware of my strengths and so-called weaknesses, but “great,” “extraordinary,” or “talented” have never been words I’d use to describe myself – well, except maybe in my mom’s eyes. But let’s be real, moms are the OG hype machines, and their descriptions tend to be, uh, wildly exaggerated.
I’m not extraordinary.
And you know what? That’s okay.
I’ve realized that I don’t need to be extraordinary to win in life.
So, let’s see how we can embrace our averageness and still overcome obstacles to achieve a fulfilling life.
The Positives: What I’ve Got Going for Me
Let’s not downplay the good stuff – these qualities help me to win in life.
- I’m a kind and thoughtful human being (it might sound “basic” – but let’s be honest, it’s not as common as it should be these days).
- I’m a planner, hardworking, resilient, good-looking (modesty, who?), healthy (at least for now), and
- I have a high tolerance for risk. Plus, I’ve got a knack for navigating life’s storms with surprising efficiency.
The Not-So-Great: Room for Improvement
On the flip side,
- I’m a worrier.
- I’m not supremely disciplined – no Ronaldo, Messi, or Kobe Bryant vibes here – and
- sometimes my procrastination skills are almost too impressive.
But here’s the thing: it’s totally okay to be “average” – and here’s why you can (and should) be happy about it!
The Pressure to Be Extraordinary
We live in a world obsessed with standing out. Social media, ads, and even our own inner critics constantly shout: “Be the best! Be perfect! Shine!”
But let’s be real – that’s exhausting.
Chasing perfection can leave you drained, stuck in a cycle of never feeling good enough.
But here’s the twist – you don’t have to be extraordinary. In fact, some of life’s best lessons come from the most unexpected (and, let’s be honest, unpopular) creatures – cockroaches.

Why Being Average is Amazing
Let’s rethink what “average” actually means.
It’s not a bad word.
Average means you’re relatable, real, and authentic.
The world doesn’t need more people trying to squeeze into some impossible mold of perfection. It needs people who embrace their quirks, imperfections, and yes, their “averageness”.
When you’re average, you get to enjoy life without the constant pressure of comparison.
You can focus on what truly matters: the little moments, meaningful connections, and the joy that helps you win with just being you.
The Magic of Letting Go
Here’s the secret: when you stop comparing yourself to others and start appreciating the little things, everything changes. You’ll see beauty in small wins, find joy in everyday moments, and discover the peace that comes from knowing you’re enough – just as you are.
Beauty of Slowing
We’re constantly bombarded with productivity hacks, blogs, and vlogs, all preaching the gospel of doing more, faster. Don’t get me wrong, productivity has its place. But have you ever noticed how this obsession robs us of the simple joys of daily life?
I used to be a full-blown workaholic, wearing it like a badge of honor. I missed out on so many moments because I couldn’t disconnect. Even when I wasn’t working, I was thinking about work. Sound familiar?
Life is fleeting. We could fall dead at any moment (not to be morbid, but hey, it’s the truth). This realization led me to prioritize finding joy in small things, spending quality time with loved ones, and get this – doing absolutely nothing some days. That’s how I learned to win in life by slowing down.
Reading the book Slowing was a game-changer for me. It showed me how slowing down benefits our minds, relationships, work, and overall well-being. In a fast-paced world, it’s both a remedy for stress and a reminder to savor life’s moments.
With 52 stories - one for every week of the year - Slowing offers simple self-care techniques to cultivate awareness, calm, and joy. It’s a balm for the stresses of modern life and a rallying cry to savor the beauty of living slow.
Ironically, slowing down has actually boosted my productivity and creativity.
Celebrate Your Average Self and Win in Life
So, let’s stop chasing perfection and start celebrating our average-selves. Let’s be kind to ourselves, laugh at our imperfections, and recognize that being “just okay” at something doesn’t make us any less valuable.
Because at the end of the day, it’s not about being perfect. It’s about being perfectly you.
And that’s a kind of greatness no one else can replicate.
With this mindset, you’ve already won in life. You can tackle any obstacle or curveball that comes your way because your authenticity, self-acceptance, and ability to embrace your averageness are your true superpowers.
Let’s raise a toast to being average – because average is authentic, and authentic is amazing!
